What is an IP Address - For Non Technical People

What is an IP Address Used For?

Every device on the network will need a valid IP address to communicate with other devices (computers, servers, network printers, IP phones, and so on). For example, when you access a network printer to print a document both devices need valid IP address and the ability to communicate with each other. 

Most IP addresses that user interact with are using IP version 4, which using a dotted decimal format as shown below.

192.168.123.100

Each set of the 4 number groups can only have values from 0 to 255.

To view the IP address of your Windows computer, execute the following steps.

1. Press the Windows Key (bottom left of your keyboard) with 4 small boxes

2. Type "Command" and a window as show below will open and select Open 

3. After selecting open, a new window will open as shown below. Type "ipconfig" and your IP address will be displayed. Your IP address in the value show in the IPv4 Address line. In the example shown below, its 10.1.10.251
